California to Alaska

What is the best time of the year for this ( I plan a 6 week trip)and what should I try to see on our first trip? I'm thinking mid May thru June. Do I need to make reservations this time of year? what camps should I stay at? As I say this is the first trip and Id like to get the most bang for my buck. thanks
  • In my opinion, 6 weeks is not enough. We spent 53 days in Alaska alone. Such a wonderful trip. Going again this next summer.
  • I just 'resurrected' the post that was started a couple months ago called "Roll Call Alaska 2017". You'll find it on this forum under 'RVing in Canada and Alaska'. Check on it often and you'll find folks adding to it all winter long.

Also look at the very top of 'RVing in Canada and Alaska' and you'll see a 'Sticky' titled 'Helpful Ideas for Alaskan Travels' which will give you some hints.

The ongoing post for this past summer's trip was titled 'Roll Call Alaska 2016' and it got 774 posts so you can be sure that the 'Roll Call Alaska 2017' will get just as much activity. That will be the place where you'll find lots of good information including from those that have already taken the trip and from those just inquiring. You'll have lots of good reading all winter long. :)
  • Thanks I will keep an eye on the new post. I can do more than 6 weeks, but trying to get as much info as I can.
  • We crossed the US, Canadian border May 1 recrossed back to US Aug 19 We didn't see everything planning on a return trip in '18'.

You won't see everything but your six weeks are better than not going. Just look at it as prep for when you can spend more time.
  • If you look on the Alaska/Canada forum on this site there is lots of information for you. Folks really start talking about it after January. There will also be an ongoing Alaska 2017 post that folks continually post on even during their summer trip. Check it out.

Can you spare more time than 6 weeks. It's a long, expensive trip. How often do you think you'll go? Most people leave the end of May and return by Labor Day. Early May can be pretty but a lot of places will still be closed and ice will be on the lakes.

We did a lot of dry camping in public parks and boondocking in awesome areas. We rarely used an RV park. If you do, pull in early afternoon and you'll get a site without reservations.

The only reservations we made for our 40' motorhome and Jeep for the whole summer were for the July 4 weekend and for 5 nights in Teklanika campground in Denali Nat'l Park. For those we only made them a couple weeks prior when we could better judge when we'd be there.

Purchase online the Milepost; Mike and Terri Church's 'Alaskan Camping' book which includes Canada and the Yukon and the TourSaver 2/1 coupon book (one glacier cruise will pay for the book).

We crossed into Canada at Sumas, Washington - a smaller, easy crossing.

Allow time to explore Canada and the Yukon, too. Lots to see even before getting to Alaska.

    Have fun planning!
