Camping at Petersburg, Alaska

We will arrive at Petersburg, Alaska on the next Ferry. Have any of you camped on this island. We are in a pickup camper and like forest service camping or dispersed camping or boondocking. Let me know of any experiences. thanks Any thoughts on the pay campgrounds

Are you going this year? Are you touring Alaska? I highly recommend Mike and Terri Church's book, 'Alaskan Camping' which includes Canada, Yukon and the border states of the lower U.S. They lived in Fairbanks and traveled to the lower 48 all the time so they know the campgrounds and boondocking spots.

Due to Covid you may find campgrounds and fuel stations out of business. They've had a tough time staying afloat without travelers. Always drive on the top 1/2 of your tank and don't plan to shop for good prices. Get it when you see it.
  • In May 2012 we and another rig (both class C towing Jeeps) worked our way up the inside passage, spending a few days at each ferry town. We spent 3 days near Petersburg at The Trees RV park and General Store, a few miles out of town. But looking for current information it sounds like they may no longer be operating. The USFS Blind Slough CG gets fairly good Google reviews, but again nothing recent. We did charter a small private boat for an all day whale watching trip on Frederick Sound which was fantastic.
