Canadians and Americans living in Mexico

According to INEJI (Instituto Nacional de Estadistica e Informatica), in the 2000 census they counted how many Canadians and Americans where living permanently in Mexico, this does not take into account the transient population known as turistas, these figures are taken from the INEJI pages, I tried to get the 2010 figures, no luck.

There are also a lot of Europeans, as well an immigrants from all over the world.

Census 2000 INEJI

Canadians 5,448,480
U.S.A. 31,107,889

Take into account that there are more Canadians and Americans that have retired in the last 15 years since this statistic was compiled, some have passed away and some have moved back while new ones have replaced them.

Some Cities are more foreign than Mexican, San Miguel de Allende for example, the shores of lake Chapala look more like American communities with a Mexican flavor.

The world is becoming smaller and more persons are on the move be it for political reasons or economics or just because they can.

This is just curiosity on my part and thought I might share it with the RV community in Mexico.

Have a pleasant day.

  • Canada last I checked had a little over 37 million residents. Over 5 million living in Mexico would sure surprise me. Over 31 million U.S. citizens living in Mexico would almost be the entire state of Calif. I would have to question these numbers.
  • Wellll I can't find any source that comes even remotely close to those numbers and frankly am in doubt about them.that would mean that in 2000 12 to 15 % percent of Canadas population lived in Mexico???
Our population in 2014 was under 40 million I believe.Does it make sense to anyone or am I missing something.
  • Our little town of Peñasco has a population of about 65000 people. There are about 6000 foreigners who live here so roughly 10% of out population are foreigners. Most of them are legal I would say.
  • I worked with a man whose daughter fell in love with a mexican national while on a spring break trip in Cabo. They ended up getting married and lived in Cabo where the groom's businesses are located. During the several trips my coworker took to Cabo to see his daughter, he and his wife fell in love with the place. He was at retirement age so they ended up retiring to Cabo and opened up a charter boat service with the son-in-law.

I lost touch with him but wonder if they are still down there.
