I've driven to / from / within Alaska since 1972. Some observations:
- RV's, not just caravans---all RV's, clog the roads during the summer tourist season.
- Most RV'rs (again not all but not just caravans) ignore the regulation that requires pulling over if 5 or more vehicles are piled up behind you. This is not unique to RV's, but is consistently ignored by many drivers of all vehicles.
- As a year-round Alaska resident (now and in the past), the summer season certainly has it's "pro's"....but many "cons", including relatively heavier traffic and an influx of folks that, strictly based on incomplete empirical evidence, can't read many traffic signs.
- Believe it or not, for any given speed limit, one can go...wait for it...that speed limit. Granted road conditions may prohibit, but for goodness sake, near Sutton and Sterling, go (at least?) the speed limit.
- Regarding the caravans tieing up campground spaces vs. "individual RV's"....IMNSHO, some folks need to get over themselves. People, whether in caravan or not, should not be rude, but if a group arrives at a campground before you and it takes longer to register...that's life. If one is #20 in line behind 19 caravan campers, how is that intrinsically any more burdensome than being behind 19 individual campers?
- For those who are bothered by the extra burden of waiting for caravans, take that concern to the logical conclusion: Residents of Alaska, Canada, and other popular spots could simply rant about RV's. That wouldn't make any sense nor does grousing about the impact due to numbers of caravan-ers.
