Central Pennsylvania to Disney's Fort Wilderness

My DW and I are planning an anniversary trip from central Pennsylvania to Disney World in Dec., 2017. Were interested in route suggestions and recommended in-route over-nite stops.
  • From Lewisburg , I would go :

81 south into southern VA , than hop onto 77 south..

Take 77 south into NC, either go around Charlotte ( 485 ), or straight down the middle depending on your timing..

cross into SC, Stay on 77 towards Columbia SC.. Hop onto 26 east..

Follow 26 East towards Charleston, and hop onto 95..

stay on 95 through GA.. into FLA.. again, depending on the time of day, either go directly through Jacksonville, or around 295..

    take 95 S to 4 West to Disney - -

Once in Florida, you could either take 295-10-301-75-to the FL turnpike and miss Orlando, but I never go that way except for once.. Huge hassle , in my opinion, not to mention a GREATER risk of speeding tickets...
  • Ford truck guy's suggestion is a very good one. That would be my general first choice of a route to Florida.

I've sometimes gone to or from Florida via I-81 to I-75 (via I-40) to change things up. It's somewhat longer (maybe an hour or so) and involves going through Atlanta and the Pigeon Forge area, both of which can be slow. Presumably one would take the Florida turnpike to get to Disney from I-75.
  • Being from Illinois we take I-24 to I-75 and down, BUT one suggestion: AVOID ATLANTA AT ALL COSTS!!!! Atlanta traffic is a nightmare. It's not so much slow traffic that I hate but all the little cars zipping in and out of lanes and cutting us off. Ugh!
  • Good places to visit on the way down or the way back would be Savannah GA & Charleston SC. Nice cities with lots of history and an incredible number of things to see & do. You'd just have to put up with some of I-95.
