Changes abound

Being away for 20 months I noticed lots of changes. The road From the border to HMO is fantastic. Mostly concrete and 4 lanes. Still a little construction. Kino is experiencing a construction boom. Lots of small hotels and one really big one( for Kino). 20 months with no one living in the house is hard on everything. Got here with no internet, no landline and my Mexican cell needs a sim card. The house water pump is being replaced soon. There is a new well and the water is not longer salty. Pot holes on the mine road are like a game of dodgem. Some are 4 ft. by 4 ft.. There are 3 psots on the main road through new Kino where the road is eaten away. Was like this 20 months ago and now is worse. Down to 1.5 lanes. Very dangerous. Does not look like it will be fixed until someone dies, Withdrew pesos from a bank that we always use. They only charge 23.50 pesos and used to get a good exchange rate. But I noticed they now charge a 5.4% upcharge. I saw this once 2 years ago at some mickey mouse but it looks like others are following suit. Too bad as this bank lets us take out 8000 pesos at a time. Will try Citibank next time. I think they allow 6000 pesos and the fee is around 45 pesos

    EDMX Estado de Mexico, the state that practically surrounds the DF Distrito Federal otherwise known as CDMX, INE Instituto Nacional Electoral, the CURP that is the equivalent to the Social Security in the US and many more that I have no inkling what they mean, now the US NAVY in San Diego has some un-pronounceable ones specially on the SEAL training base in South Coronado that one is a tongue twister!

    Mexicans love acronyms. CDMX is Ciudad de Mexico. AMLO is an acronym d for the present Presidente of of Mexico. IMSS is short for the Social Security system. There are hundreds of them. Expats also have some: SMA is San Miguel de Allende. NOB is North of the Border. SOB is south of the border. Feel free to join in with more.

    Thanks much. Been through Hermosillo a couple times on the way to La Penita (near Guayabitos). Might be through in January or might head down the Baja. Safe travels.

    Hermosillo. HMO is the airport designation.

    Kino is the town on the coast to the west of Hermosillo where Moisheh has a home.

    I appreciate the info on this forum except that some of you Mexico veterans use acronyms for towns that this traveler has no idea of. I'm not a veteran, but I do have a good 12,000 miles (nearly 20,000 km for everyone else in the world) driving around Mexico. No idea where or what HMO is. Kino? Please help me out. I might be headed that way soon. Gracias.

    So glad is well. We feel the same about spares, we always carried a torque wrench and it kept things from happening.

    ATM's always have new things to try to pull.

    Traffic in Hermosillo??? And the old passage through town? Hated it!!!

    Tallyho. Thanks for that tip. I wnt to Hmo today and sure enough it asked me if aI wanted to decline. Checked my bank account and wit the ATM fee rate was 20.9 as for the pump I bought a new one and will have the old one rebuilt. The opposite of Murphy's' law is that if you have a spare nothing ever goes wrong! The traffic in HMO is like the game fast and furious except it is for real.

    Have your house waterpump rebuilt, the cost is minimal, they will demonstrate it for you and you will have a spare. Takes about 24 hours.

    Supposedly the trick is (and you must know this) is at an ATM if they offer you an exchange rate say NO. Typically it is at least 1 peso to the dollar of whatever currency you are using that the going rate. Then they will give you money at whatever rate your bank offers, always better.

    So, isn't it wonderful being warm? Being in your personal paradise? Checking in with your neighbors and plantings to see how things are? We sure hope so!
