Payload changes on Hills

Hello,

When checking all the numbers for payload, pin weight, etc., these values are of course done on a level surface.  Do the maximal ratings imply that if I keep within specification on a level surface, then going up and down slopes, (which to me seems that weight will be shifted forward or back), is already considered in the specification?  (Don't need to worry about only traveling in the flatlands when maxed out.)

Thanks

  • With questions like this, another consideration may be your experience or comfort level with a big trailer.
Something only you really know, but it’s not always the best idea to jump right into what is effectively a miniature semi truck if you don’t have some previous experience or comfort level with towing.
Again also situationally dependent. Less considerations in the flat lands compared to coming down Wolf Creek Pass loaded for bear….

  • thanks everyone for the input. My assumption is the engineers already have this in their calculations. Sounds like that is correct.  Not too worried about things shifting more so just about the angle shift in the weight vector more towards the pin and would then technically be overweight unless the Engineers already thought of this which it sounds like they probably have.  ( if they hadn’t that could be a big problem, but it’s good not to assume.).

    Thanks

  • I highly doubt that going downhill has any more weight transfer than decelerating. It's not something to worry about. The things in your trailer aren't (or at least SHOULDN'T be) moving around.

  • Your load should not shift significantly when driving down the road. In 20 years towing my trailer I might have had one can of beans fall over and roll around. Other than that stuff just doesn't really move around and I'm a fairly spirited driver when towing.

In fact I can say in the 20 years I've been on this board we've debated towing and weights ad nauseam with some of the contributors claiming to have been design engineers from the big 3 in Detroit.  I guarantee you if it was an issue it would have been discussed.

  • factory ratings have a huge safety margin built into them.  you are now talking dynamic loads vs static loads, but I am sure you will be fine going up and down the hills in the roads.
