Charleston vs Savanna?

How long would you allow in each? Must sees? Where to stay? I am drawn to Red Gate in Savannah, but am open to others. Convenience counts & their shuttle service sounds good. Which city did you prefer &why? Thanks!

  • Hmmmmm... Seems Savannah is getting a bit shortchanged here! ;)

Meanwhile, Red Gate is one of the better CGs in Savannah. I'm partial to Skidaway Island State Park though. FHU, HUGE sites and spread out. It's all under a tree cover, so satellite reception is iffy, at best. But the nature trails more than make up for lack of TV for me.

Then there is John Berent's (author of "Midnight in The Garden of Good & Evil") assessment of the city: "In Atlanta, they ask what business you're in... In Macon, they ask what church you go to... In Augusta, they ask your mother's maiden name... In Savannah, they ask, "What would you like to drink?"

    MY kinda place!
  • I will also go with Charleston and James Island County Park is great.

If you want to split the difference, stay at Hunting Island SP outside of Beaufort. About 1 1/2 hrs to either of them.
  • Charleston is better IMO with much more to see and do. I can easily spend a week in Charleston. Savannah is nice too but I wouldn't stay more than 3 days to see the sights. Charleston has free tourist bus service on most of the peninsula from the visitor center. I have done both.
  • We have done both a few times. We like both but Charleston has more to see, more history. The Hunley the harbor the vistas Ft. Sumter etc. I think the food is better too. You could easily spend a week in Charleston.
  • We really enjoyed Charleston, South Carolina. We stayed at the Campground at James Island County Park and thought it was great. We have never visited Savannah so cannot compare the two.
