If you take the I-20 route, you will not go thru downtown Atlanta. From Columbia SC to Atlanta on I-20 then at I-285/I-20 head toward the Atlanta airport. Just past where I-285 runs under the taxiway and runway, start looking for the I-85 South exit (within a half mile of the runway. Careful here, there is one road to North, another to the AP and the third to 85 South. From there it is clear sailing, multi-lane until well away from Atlanta.
