Chattanooga, TN to Gainesville, GA

I didn't find anything on a search. Can anyone recommend a good route from Chattanooga, TN to Gainesville, GA without going down to I-285 just north of Atlanta? I tried a short cut once and it was a pain towing the 5th wheel. I think it was Hwy 53. Thanks in advance.
  • Look at GA 20 between Cartersville and Cumming. I've never done it but it might be ok.

That route is awful. Heavy traffic, constant stop lights, and soccer moms driving breathlessly!

    75 all the way !
That would be great if he was going to Fla.
  • Unfortunately it is over the mountains, across GA 20 and all the traffic lights and heavy traffic or I75/I285/I85/I985.

For 25 years they have talked about building an outer perimeter but they have not.
  • Thanks everyone, looks like it is the I-285 for the foreseeable future.
  • Go east from Chattanooga on US 64. You will go through the Ocoee Gorge but it is not a problem if you drive carefully. At Ducktown, TN turn right onto TN 68 and continue south into GA. At McCaysville, TN 68 becomes GA 5. Continue to Blue Ridge and turn right at the intersection of US 76. This a four-lane highway. Just north of Ellijay, turn east on GA 52 and continue through what we call "Apple Valley". At the intersection of GA 52 and GA 183, bear right onto 183 and follow it to where it merges with GA 53 and goes to Dawsonville. Outside Dawsonville continue on 53 to Gainesville. This sounds complicated but it really isn't and these are good roads with gentle curves and no mountain grades. The most difficult part is the Ocoee Gorge. lizzie
