Chief Joseph Hihway

How long would it take to drive from Fishing Bridge RV Park around the Beartooth/Chief Joseph Hiway loop to Cody and back to Fishing Bridge? It looks like a beautiful trip but may not be feasible as my wife can't ride for long periods.

Thanks
Bob

We have done it a couple of times from Cody. It is about a 180 mile loop. If you go the Chief Joseph to the Beartooth to Red Lodge, Red Lodge makes a nice stop for a break to walk around and maybe get something to eat before heading back to Cody. In addition to the Buffalo Bill Museums, Cody has Old Trail Town and the nightly rodeo. On the way to Casper, Thermopolis is worth a stop to visit the hotsprings and bath house, Dinosaur Museum and Legend Rock Petroglyph Site.
  • Thanks guys. Maybe we will stay a day in Cody on the way to Rapid City and drive at least part of it.

Can't help myself.......Yes, it would appear that you'd have to slow down as you pulled the horse trailer over the dead indian:)

Here in the east, they make the speed bumps out of pavement:B
  • Guess it depends on what you are driving. Just your toad? Seems like east ward over dead indian is a little steeper. Driven it 100s of times but never timed it. 8000 ft pass. It is slow going pulling a horse trailer over dead indian. They used to have several life size metal indians on horse back at the summit view point. Someone cut them down and stole them about 10 years ago. Sad. Great scenic drive. Awesome in winter when it is open. We still drive over dead inian to sunlight basin to get our Christmas tree.U.S. forest cut permit only about $12. A trip to WY is fun. Living here is an adventure of a lifetime.JMHO
  • OP on another thread is asking about routes from Casper.

IF you want to do BT and CJ, stop in Cody and make it a day trip from there, not FB. You can easily do Cody>Red Lodge>back down Chief Joe to Cody in about 7 hours and se ethe best of both highways. :) :)

Off topic, but anybody passing through Cody really should stop by the Buffalo Bill Historical Center . You could easily spend a good part of the day there - - if not longer.

X2, stay in Cody and enjoy the area, we did it in 2005 and will do it again next year.
  • Figure on spending the whole day.

220 miles, 5hrs, on Google Maps - implies a 40 mph average. That sounds reasonable. Add in stops for sights. Add in another 50 miles to drive to the top of the Beartooth part and back.
  • FB>>Beartooth>>>Red Lodge>>Cody>>>FB...9-10 hours

    FB>>Chief Joe>>Cody>>FB... about6-7 hours

Both are times without much stopping.

Our normal "visiting company" trip Grant>>Beartooth>>Cody is 7 hours and we overnight in Cody. Three to three and a half Cody to Grant. About 120 pictures on a "normal" trip.
    :) :)
  • Did you try checking it out with Google Maps ("get directions" to see how far it is? They are pretty good about the times it will take too.

I'm on the East Coast, so those places meant nothing to me....though it does sound nice.
