Just returned from a 2 1/2 month trip through Canada and Alaska. Up the Alaskan Hwy and down the Cassiar. We traveled with the signature Chev 2500HD & 36' Jayco. The key to avoiding damage is to SLOW DOWN, we didn't even get a chip in the windshield. We drove 10,450 miles and, combined towing & touring got 9.1mpg.
Smaller rigs would allow more flexibility in places to stay but we had no problem finding space. You'll be fine with either 5er or Class A. If Class A I would strongly recommend a toad for convenience and flexibility for side-trips.
