Cody To Sheridan Wyoming

We are going to be traveling from Cody Wyoming to Sheridan. Good Sam tripmaker is taking us over 14. Looks to be going over a mountain pass. Will we be okay in a 36 ft motorhome towing a rav4?

  • I drove the route today 14A to Badger Basin (294) to 120 through Belfry, B4 Bridger it is 310 through Bridger. Fuel at Maverik. Gas was $3.53.9 today with card. Mile or so of construction at railroad bridge south of Laural. Bridge is 14' 1". Justs looks lower. Good route. Best Walmart is in Laural. Past I-90, 2nd light a right and Walmart at end of road. Don't go any further than 2nd light because that bridge is low. It was hot in Billings today but not that much traffic for a weekend.
  • Lavin,
Consider yourself a "Flatlander". Meaning you've not traveled a route that has pullouts with signs that tell you to pull over and check your brakes. You've probably not seen a steep decline with a runaway truck ramp at the bottom. Can it be done? Sure. Will you enjoy the ride? Probably not.
I had all the fun I could stand on Rt.16, and that's the easiest of the three. I go around.

Thanks WyoTraveler. We might just go that route instead. Ultimate destination is Little Big Horn so we will take your advice and go that way.

Some construction on 14A just out of Cody but not too bad. Just for 3 or 4 miles. Then 4 lane to Badger Basin. By Oct it will all be 4 lane.

  • If you don't take 16 the other way would be to take 14A north to the Badger Basin road (294) then west to 120 then north through Belfry, Bridger to I-90 then east to Sheridan. Takes about 2 hours to Billings. You could take 120 out of Cody but you do go over a small pass north. The Badger Basin road goes through some unusual scenery getting to 120. If you go that route watch speed through Belfry and Bridger. Fuel is more reasonable @ Maverik just outside Bridger. You go through lots of farm land on the way to Billings. Easy route. We travel that route couple times a month to shop in Billings. East out of Billings on I-90 stop off at the Little Big Horn battle field. Listen to ranger talk first, buy CD then drive the battle field. Very interesting history. BTW, we live on a ranch about 15 miles north of Cody. JMHO.
  • Only way to avoid mountain passes would be go north to I-90 at Laurel MT. then east/southeast to Sheridan. Hwy 16 is doable but still a fairly steep pass.

Saw that route too but it also looks like it goes over a mountain pass. If you say its easier, that's the way we will go. Curvy not so much a problem...we just don't want any long uphill grades.

Unless you go way around you have to cross the Big Horn Mountains.....
Hwy 16 is the one with the least and shortest section of steep grades
  • Thanks

  • DO you like mountain driving....curvy, windy road?

Hwy 16 at Greybull down to Worland and then over to Buffalo and up to Sheridan is an 'easier' mountain route.
    About 70 miles/hour longer trip.
