Cody Wyoming to Victor Idaho

Hey Friends, We are pulling a 40ft. 5th wheel and planning on going through the East entrance of Yellowstone and then down to Jackson by way of the Tetons then over to Victor, Idaho. Yay or Nay? Any problems with the 10% grade between Jackson & Victor? Thanks!!

  • it might be faster to just go through yellowstone park and take 20 south.
  • Thank you so much for your input!! Just had the feeling it would be better to avoid Teton Pass and you all confirmed it!!
  • Definitely avoid Teton Pass. You are better off going through Alpine Junction from Jackson. If for some reason you have to go to Victor, from Alpine Junction take Hwy 26 to 31, over Pine Creek Pass, a shorter, less steep pass.
  • There are some place in Jackson with RV parking a few blocks off the main drag. You might check with the visitor's center for details. It's quite possibly moved since I was there.

It was easy to park and walk around downtown.
  • Ditto coolmom - definitely take US 26 to Rte 31. There's enough mountain driving in that little pass on 31 for scenery and excitement w/o busting your brakes & tranny. The whole thing is a pretty drive as well. Note that Jackson itself is pretty congested; you may want to consider the truck route through town. It will bypass the square (with the famous antler arches) but is easier for towing, especially with large rigs, than trying to negotiate a bunch of stoplights, traffic, pedestrians who are looking at the sights or window shopping & not paying attention to traffic, etc.
  • A friend of mine lives near Victor. He says under no circumstances try to take a trailer of any kind over Teton Pass--it is widely known for being a transmission and brake killer. There are 10% grades on both sides.

There are numerous stories of disaster on this forum from those who ignored the warnings!

A bit more of a drive--but much safer and cheaper in the long run--is to take US 89 down through Hoback and then US 26 up to SR 31. I've been that route and it is very scenic.

You can also go over to West Yellowstone and down US 20 and SR 32.
