Cody, WY to Grand Teton

Hello Everyone-

I need some advice. We are in Cody, WY and planning to leave tomorrow to drive to Colter Bay RV Park in Moran, WY. We were planning on driving west on 14/16/20 and enter Yellowstone's east entrance and then head south on 191/26/89 to Moran. (My GPS wants us to drive all the way south to Riverton and then head north east on 26/287.)

We are traveling in our 45' motorhome towing our car. Has anyone driven the first way I described and can we do this safely and comfortably with our rig?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks.
Leslie

  • Is there construction on that entrance? I thought I read somewhere that the road is gravel right now. If memory serves me correctly, that's the entrance with what's called The Golden Gate - a beautiful climb up. Yes, take it slow and you'll be just fine.
  • Thank you all for the advice. Don't mind slow as long as it's safe.

    Happy travelling to all.

  • Go west through Yellowstone, then south. Watch your mirrors when going through the east Yellowstone gate. Enough clearance but close. Hope you enjoyed your trip through our town of Cody.
  • We drove it last year pulling a 30' 5th wheel. Very scenic drive but it will be slow. I saw several large motorhomes.
    You should have no problem.
  • Just drove the east entrance to Cody WY route few weeks back.

Beautiful route, but it sure slows you down once into the park. Lots of slow curves and it will be a solid uphill climb for quite a ways once into the park, almost all the way to Yellowstone Lake.
  • The drive west from Cody is a major entrance to Yellowstone. In fact it is the best if heading to the main RV campground in the park (Fishingbridge).

The main reason for taking the south route is that it might be a bit faster (your speeds in Yellowstone will be lower), and avoids the Yellowstone entrance fee (but that applies to GTeton).

    So either will work.
