Coeur D'Alene to Pocatello ID tomorrow

I'm flying up to Spokane WA tomorrow morning and we're picking up a car near Coeur D'Alene ID. I'm hoping to get on the road by noon and we'll be heading to Pocatello. The weather looks clear for tomorrow, but I don't know that route and I don't know how safe it is in a rear wheel drive auto this time of year. Any tips or concerns?
  • Just as an epilogue...

We made it home safe & sound. The road 90 east was pretty slow, so we didn't make it very far on Friday. Saturday morning we left from Dillon MT and drove the 1,050 miles home to L.A., which broke my previous distance record of L.A. to Pocatello. It was a long beautiful drive.
  • US95 has some grades where it drops to the Snake and Salmon Rivers (Lewiston, Whitebird). Those concern RVs, but in a car aren't an issue. At New Meadow you can stay on 94, or turn left to McCall and 55 to Boise. McCall is probably the highest point on this route - it's a favorite vacation spot for Boise residents.

But in snowy conditions, the 90/15 route is probably better plowed.
  • Get a set of tire chains at Les Schwab while you're in Coeur d'Alene just in case you might need them as you travel to Pocatello.

While it's all freeway, you cross the Continental Divide twice what way. Plus two additional passes.

I'm only recalling one pass on US-95 and nothing once you hit the Interstate in Idaho.
If weather is good I'd go US-95

Getting a car at Dave Smith eh

Which route do you have in mind? US 95 tosouth to I 84 then east or I 90 east and then south? Either way - take the former advice and watch/check the weather and road conditions! This time of year - either way could be tricky. Good luck!

  • Call or check IDOT's 511 site/number

Browsing the web cams I am seeing a lot of 'snow on roadway', 'slush' and 'icy patches' warnings through out the state.
