Colorado Highway 14 Poudre VS I-70/Hwy 40 to Walden, CO??

Hello,
Heading to Walden area this weekend and I am considering trying a new route. Living in Erie, CO area I have taken the I-70 route numerous times but the tunnel construction is a mess right now. I will be towing a 30' tow hauler and would like to know if Highway 14 Poudre Canyon is a decent route to take? I have heard it is really slow but quite scenic??
Thanks in advance for any info!
Mike
  • Slow but scenic is correct. But a whole lot closer than going down to I 70/US 40 and then north! Used to live in Ft. Colins and went over to the State Forest often!! As the teens say - "just do it!"
  • Very good road and not a problem for towing. Be careful, however, if it has been raining as they have had mudslides close portions of the road lately.
  • Scenic road. OK for towing. You might consider going up to Laramie and down via WY 230 / CO 127. More miles but will be quicker when you are towing.

One more vote for 14 -- so scenic -- will make the trip a lot more fun (JMHO) Great road and one of the most scenic Bunch of Rocks you will ever see.

If you needed another route we have done Berthoud Pass going by Granby and Kremmling, but I am a nut and just love the mountain Passes in Colorado.

If it were me I'd go one way and return the other, but that's me.

    BOL,
  • Wow...great feedback. I think I will give 14 a try this trip...I am looking forward to some new scenery.
    Thanks for all the help!!!
  • Enjoy the trip, I was up in North Park at the dunes a few weeks ago. Went up through Laramie, came back down 14. Living in Erie, I would not even consider I-70.
