- profdant139Explorer IIWow!! It looks like the glaciers are making a comeback! ;)
- d3500ramExplorer IIISome images of the recent avalanche in Frisco:
The first image is taken from my office, the second image is 'prolly from the Ptarmigan area for folks familiar with the area- the Dam is in the lower left of those comparisons.

Here are a couple of photos sent to me by friends in Leadville this week. Spring is a long, long way away!
We were in Leadville over the weekend and slipped (literally) down I-70 between the 2 avalanches on Sunday. - 4runnerguyExplorer

Been an amazing year on the slopes. Looked at my calendar and I've only missed 4 days since January 1! Pretty epic season.naturist wrote:
Yea, but the skiing is great!
Video proof there are times and places you wanna be elsewhere. - d3500ramExplorer IIIThings are picking up to be one of the most active avalanche seasons.
A slide on the chute near Peak 1 in Frisco is visible from my office. Reports of multiple cars trapped under a slide on Route 91 near Copper Mountain occurred this evening. Rescue crews are searching for backcountry skiers in the "Minturn Mile." That is some great backcountry skiing, but NOT under these conditions. Local NOAA radio is yet again reporting a winter storm warning for tomorrow.
I am glad I have a honkin' track snowblower... it is sure getting a workout this winter. - gkainzExplorerWe were in Leadville over the weekend and slipped (literally) down I-70 between the 2 avalanches on Sunday.
- d3500ramExplorer IIIThose 2 avalanches were about 5 miles from my office. Even though natural, they were minor and thankfully no injuries. CDOT performed a controlled avalanche the day after just east of the Eisenhower Tunnel at the divide. They used explosives dropped from helicopters to set it off... then several hours of interstate closure to clear the snow and debris with front-end loaders, graders and excavators.
Today there was another avalanche near Copper Mountain (between Frisco and Vail if you are unfamiliar) which ruptured a natural gas line. I-70 is closed in several places with only local traffic allowed. Breckenridge Ski Resort has limited areas open with the majority closed due to avalanche danger. Arapahoe Basin ski area is completely closed due to the dangers!
Winter weather causes closures across Summit County
Had another 2 feet or so of snow in my driveway today after another storm overnight. This week between these two storm, we have had 4+ feet of snow and it is still dumping out as I type.
I have co-worker who lives at Copper Mountain. He rightfully cannot get to the office... and no one can travel make it to the mountain on a powder day. I feel so sorry for him with very little company on that mountain;) - fanrgsExplorer
