Colter Bay (Grand Tetons) to Massacre Rocks SP (Idaho)

Hi,
I've searched, but I'm still confused, so please cut me some slack ;)

We're at Colter Bay RV Park after an amazing 9 days of Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. We entered via West Yellowstone, stayed and Grant Village, and then moved to Colter Bay. I was going to move to our next stop (Massacre Rocks State Park, on 86 in Idaho, just outside of American Falls), via Jackson Hole , but it looks like intended route takes us over the dreaded Teton Pass (26 to Jackson Hole, with a "right turn" onto 22, like this: google map . What are my alternatives? Back through Yellowstone? 189 south and the "long way around"?
Thanks!

  • Go south of Jackson to Alpine Junction, then take RT 26 to Idaho Falls and I-15 to I-86. Excellent road all the way. Then if you like you can take RT 39 off I-15 at Blackfoot, go thru Aberdeen into American Falls and onto I-86.
  • Take US 189 & US 89 S towards Hobeck; US-89 S to WY-239 W in Freedom, ID-34 W to U.S. 30 W/E 2nd S in Soda Springs, I.S. 30 W, I-15 N and I-86 W to ID-39 N in Power County. Take exit 40 from I-86 W.

Never been on all this route, but it is a way.

We stayed at Massacre Rocks SP for a few days years ago. A neat place.

:)Ooops! bobsallyh beat me to it. Ha!
  • You want to continue heading south to Hoback Jct. then Hwy 26 west to I-15. Very scenic and an easy route. No need to take Teton Pass.
  • Thanks to all (as always, this forum is great). We'll take the Hobeck/South Park route out of Jackson. After climbing the West side of the Sierras, the various mountains in NV and up into West Yellowstone over the Targhee grade (plus the 600 miles of driving in the parks), both myself and the F250 could use a break before having to climb over NV and back into California ;) We've heard a lot of great things about Massacre Rocks and are looking forward to finishing out 15 days out there before the inevitable return to reality.
    Happy travels!
  • Just wanted to update for those that may follow: We took the Hobeck -> Alpine Junction as planned, and it was a very easy and scenic ride. After a stop at the Pocatello Walmart during what had to be one of the most intense rainstorms I've experienced in a LONG time, we made our way to Massacre Rocks at about 4:30pm last night and enjoyed and evening and day here - it's a great park - we really recommend it. Tommorrow, onto Winnemucca and then home (Fairfield, CA) early the next day. Thanks!
