Connecticut to Jones Beach, Long Island

My husband and I have a 40' RV and are taking it with some friends to a show at Jones Beach this week. Neither of us is familiar with Long Island and I see that we cannot take the RV on most of the parkways.

Does anyone know the best route coming from I95 in CT to get out to Jones Beach?

Thanks so much

Yes, but once you're on the Island, things get a little more interesting. It may a look a bit out-of-the-way, but I'd suggest taking the LIE(495) to the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (Rt. 135). That will give you the quickest route to the South Shore. Your alternative is surface streets.

The S-OB ends at Merrick Rd (also known as Montauk Hwy). A short drive back west on Merrick Rd will get you to the Wantagh Parkway and down to Jones Beach.

Trucks/RVs are ok to travel on both the Meadowbrook and Wantagh Parkways south of Merrick Rd.

I live a few miles away .... like others said, take LIE (495) east to Seaford-Oyster Bay Expy (SOB 135). Take the SOB south to Merrick Rd. Then head west on Merrick Rd to Wantagh Parkway, take Wantagh Parkway south to the Jones Beach Theater. You MUST get on the on the Wantagh Parkway at Merrick Rd, If you get on anywhere else you WILL hit a bridge and wreck your RV.

ETA: Spent the first 22 years of my life on Long Island - going to the Jones/Moses beaches every weekend during the summer was SOP for us.

ETAA: There are still some low bridges once you get to Jones Beach. You can use Google Maps Street View and you can see the bridge clearance signs. There's one 8-foot bridge, which you can go around, but then there's a 12' bridge.

They obviously can get semis down there for all the concerts they do at Jones Beach Theatre, so there must be a way. You might actually have to go further east to the Robert Moses Causeway, and come back west on Ocean Parkway.
  • Thank you, but after 495 east it looks like only parkways that don't allow commercial vehicles headed to Jones Beach
