I'm new to this site and have a few questions.
Bob, Welcome to this site. First, there is an enormous amount of information in a "Sticky" at the very beginning of this forum titled "Helpful Ideas for Alaskan Travels". Secondly, check in with the current members planning to go this summer on the post titled "Roll Call Alaska 2014" for lots more good reading.
Purchase the Milepost for all the information you'd want to know of the routes you'll drive and historical information. The maps are excellent. For camping information from boondocking spot to RV parks and where to get water and dump, purchase Mike and Terri Church's book "Alaskan Camping" which includes the Yukon and some of Canada, also.
If you still have questions, feel free to ask them and you'll get helpful answers. Basically, once you cross into Canada you won't find a lot of Wal Marts. However, you will find many gorgeous boondocking spots to spend a night. Also, the provincial parks in Canada and the Yukon are awesome.
As far as preparing your vehicles for the trip, just make sure your tires are in excellent condition and possibly replacing them beforehand. There are plenty of repair places along the route so you don't have to carry a lot of spare parts if you have taken care of your vehicles. You'll meet many friendly fellow travelers and residents who will help you if needed. If you're stuck alongside the road someone will stop to help. That's just the way it is.
Speaking of roads, the conditions change from year to year and there's always some road repairs in progress. When you enounter these gravel sections just remember to drive very slowly through them and any damage will be minimal, if any. Also, if you see a vehicle approaching, move to the side of the road as safely as possible or sometimes you can even stop completely to let the vehicle pass. This will prevent windshield cracks. We didn't have any repairs or damage on our trips. Just don't be in a rush. It's slow-going.
Have fun planning!
