Does anyone have information about crossing at Los Indios going toward Tampico and Costa Esmerelda? We have been reading that there is a Federale escort each day with at least 100 vehicles in the caravan being escorted at 100 miles per hour to Tampico. Do you think it could be 100 kph. I just don't think our rig would go 100 mph even in the states. We are wondering if it is even worth the trip if we have to be that scared to go? This would be the first year in the last 10 that we haven't made it to Mexico for the winter. Although winter is almost over, we need our Mexico fix. ha ha haWe usually go much further south but would be satisfied to at least make it to Casitas.

That's news to me, I'm heading that way on Mar 3rd in the opposite direction.Seems like all the buses and trucks that go down MX180 have no problem.If you are worried use Laredo, Columbia crossing. Everyone loves it.

This does sound very strange - 100 vehicles??? - 100 KPH??? - A couple years ago there was something about Green Angles escorting groups of RVs who requested it but can't imagine anything like 100 vehicle forming up - or being able to keep up. These rumor mills sure do get carried away at times!!

On that route, even 100 km/hr is FAST for a caravan. Been that route, done that.CLEARLY, no faster than that.

By the way Los Indios is the only crossing into Mexico by transmigrantes. These are the guys that drive totally junk cars through MX to Guatemala to be repaired.I don't think any of of them could go over 80 kph without totally falling apart. :)

I have to say, 100 car caravan at 100 mph (or even kph) has to be one of the most bizarre stories I have heard. I have friends crossing north bound on Tuesday and will have them ask around as they start to get close to Los Indios. I expect it is a story bigger than Texas.

I know it is hard to believe that South Texas would print propaganda in hopes of scaring people from crossing into Mexico. Go Figure.
Top speed on toll roads in Mexico is 110 KPH, may be a few at 120 KPH. The road from and to Tampico is not a toll road so speed limits are much lower.
Can you imagine 100 to 150 vehicles traveling at even 110 KPH ( about 70 mph) in a convoy? Think about it.

I find this extremely difficult to believe. Many vehicles cannot go 100mph and few drivers are qualified to drive at that speed (whether they think they are or not). About 15 years ago I found a newspaper article online which turned out to be about me and things I said - not one single word of the article was true. Much of what is online today falls into that category. More lies than truth.

I did see about 10 cars with a police car in front and back near Ciudad Victoria. But I was on the route from Tampico to Los Indios from 9 am to 4 pm and there was plenty of unescorted traffic including trucks and buses. We went through at least 4 police check points and one military check but that is normal.
So I guess the answer is they are available if you like or just drive it like the rest of the traffic. They are trying to encourage people to come so I guess many would feel more comfortable with a police escort.

Check this out on the internet (we heard it on tv) Go to: Mexican tourists Now Traveling With Police Escorts to the US Border. The only difference is it says they are leaving from Reynosa and Matamoras. The tv said from the border. Anyway, something to think about. We may leave out of AZ. Have done that route before and then over to the Pacific. I like the Gulf better, but however I can get to the farthest place south, is the way we will go. Still in need of my Mexico FIX!!!

Maybe the story can be found on the internet under news for the lower valley or Mission, TX??? I am not sure any more.

Drove from Quintana Roo to cross the border at Los Indios in 3 long days (32 hours).
No problems or police searches anywhere. Rain near Tampico got us all dirty, crossing at Los Indios. No line at all, 2 gates open.

Then the fun began trying to get back into the USA, they searched RV, found 1 potato, then they x-rayed us at the truck area, then they did a search of every cupboard, inside & outside storage, totally trashing the RV and leaving outside sewer and battery compartments open. We must have looked liked smugglers.
They were rude the entire time, must have thought we were Canadians :)

This the second line, just below the heading of Cris's link.
No where, as far as I can tell, do they mention caravans for the public. In fact at least twice the say there is no need for caravans. It seems the State police start increasing patrols at around 7 am . And that seems to be between Reynosa and Matamoros.

So Chris are they saying there is one a day starting at 7 AM?
Or are they leaving military check points throughout the day.
We generally would be going on MX83 at 11 AM and then MX101 toward Matamoras around noon to 4 PM.
