CT to Myrtle Beach

This is our first BIG trip. There are 2 routes to consider.
-84west > 81south > 64east > 95south (longer but avoids NYC and NJ)
-95 south the WHOLE way down (shorter but includes the GW Bridge and NYC and NJ)
Anyone takes these routes? Advice???

  • We have vacationed in Myrtle Beach for years before we retired and became Snowbirds. A fellow worker and I made who also vacationed each year in MB, made it a point to determine the best route. We can vouch for taking 84 to 81, but then before Stasburg, VA, take 66 East to 17 South and you'll reconnect on I-95 near Fredericksburg. We have done it by car, by motorhome, and also pulling a 38' Fifth Wheel. It's easy travel and the 66/17 crossover is scenic and a nice change. Try it, you'll like it! We came up through Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey this Spring to try that route and once was more than enough. Happy trails & safe travels, Jack & Niki
  • We do the 84 to 81 route as well. Have done I95 but it is so congested and plain ugly - "jersey" barriers most of the way as I recall. So all you are looking at are concrete barriers. I'd avoid it in the NY/NJ area.

Farther south I95 (VA) is fine as someone mentioned.

84 out of Ct to 87 south after the Newburgh,NY bridge to Sufferin,Ny and pickup 287 for 40 miles to 78 west....stay on 78 to 81....go 81 to I-66 near Winchester,Va on 66 fo 25 miles to Va rt 17...which is like Ct-rt 9......stay on 17 around Warrenton,Va to 95 and then down 95.......then you can go around Richmond or go straight thru on 95.....great route....Chuck
  • Rather than going through NYC and over the GW bridge, take the Tappan Zee bridge and then the Garden State parkway to the NJ Turnpike. Avoid the rush hours.
  • We have done that a few time when visiting on the East Coast and used the 84, 81, 64 route. I'd recommend that over driving the 95 through all that traffic congestion. We have also taken 64 to Norfolk then outer banks then to Wilmington and on to Myrtle beach. If you have the time I would recommend that detour.
  • We do that run a couple of times a year.....we did the GW bridge route ONCE.....ONLY ONCE NEVER AGAIN.
