It is a good road . Part 2 lane part 4 lane. when you get to Tucumcari, NM 54 will run with Interstate 40 to Santa Rosa, NM then branch off S/W towards Vaughn , Carrizozo, Alamogordo and then pickup highway 70 to Las Cruces. I just drove from Dalhart, TX to Nogal, NM on that road yesterday.....Good road with no problems and no mountain driving.
