Death Valley in December

Please share your stories of visiting Death Valley in late November / early December. I'd especially like to hear your memories of the following roads (please provide what you drove: 4wd or 2wd; truck, suv, or car):

Racetrack Road
Titus Canyon
20 Mule Team Canyon

Most online comments are made by folks just visiting for a day or two for a quick sightsee and I'd rather hear from RVers who frequent these types of roads more often and don't freak simply because it is dirt.

  • I had no issues in March 2018 or January 2019 on any of DV's dirt roads. Echo Canyon got...interesting however. My Tahoe is two wheel drive.
  • Racetrack will be the washboard that gets you. Mix of sand and gravel surface. Took me 3 hrs in, 2 hrs out. Don't forget to bring an old tea kettle. I have 4WD but 2WD s/b fine with due caution and moderate skill.

Titus is mostly hard packed mud to give a very solid surface. Do not go if it has been raining or could rain. The approach to red pass will be deep mud. I barely made it in 4WD. The end is in a stream bed (slight down hill) with loose gravel but decent 2WD s/b fine.

20mule team canyon? Do you mean Borax works? Any vehicle can make this short easy drive to see the legacy equipment. Or something else?

Most of the road descriptions are overly cautious and the actual drive will be easier than expected. Of course conditions can vary. Always allow more time than you expect. Carry extra food and water.
  • Thanks. Yeah, I realize some will have gone a good while back and the roads will change every year with rains, etc., but it does help hearing your stories.

I'm definitely going that time of year - temps around 65 are much preferred (and my dogs and parrot will be with me, so that time of year they are OK'd to stay in the suv while I explore a bit). I expect some of these roads to be dependent on the weather while I'm there and potential flash floods, etc.
  • I've been on them all, we must have spent 2 or 3 weeks in DV. We drove to the race track and actually kept going to 395 on a back road and we visited all the other places. However it was a long time ago and of no help to you. I was driving a 2WD Dodge Duster 340 at the time and had no trouble. DV is well worth a long visit in the cool months there is actually a lot to see. Like the mine building with 18 inch concrete walls because they bought too much cement.
