Delaware to Virginia

I am trying to plan a trip that will allow us to visit and "camp" in the few remaining states that are not already colored-in on our map. All these remaining states are in the heavily populated Northeast. I will seek advice on this forum as I plan, but I think it will be better to deal with single specific routes, rather than the whole trip.

SO . . . here goes. Is there an RV friendly route directly from Laurel Creek, Delaware to Newport New, VA? What are the alternate possibilities?

I've given plenty of advice about the mountain West and about East Texas, so let me hear from you Nor'easters.

EDIT shows how little I know. It must be "Laurel, DE"
  • Just want to express a final "Thank You!" for all these helpful responses.

This is exactly the information I needed, and we just might make this trip in late June and July.

    Thank You.
  • The Eastern Shore is sort of my home turf. For CGs Killens Pond just S of Dover is a good one.Careful...easy to miss the turn off of 13. Shad Landing is another pretty one. St Michaels & the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is worth a look. Pretty town. No fast food chain restaurants at all. Closest CG for St Michaels is Martinak in Denton. Another nice SP.

Down near the CBBT lots of people like Kiptopeke SP. OK I guess. Not fussy about it myself. The CBBT is a hoot. 22 miles of it. You get out in the middle on a hazy day & land cannot be seen.

Oh yeah, the whole DELMARVA peninsula is flat. Flat, flat, flat. Gives Florida competition for being flat.
  • X2 on route 13.

As a heads up, when you get to the toll for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel you will be asked to turn off the propane. Also, if there are strong winds, they close the bridge to high profile vehicles, such as RVs, trucks, etc. The two one mile long tunnels are one lane in each direction and it's a bit of a thrill when a truck or bus goes by in the opposite direction.
  • many people take the tunnel. Going around will be at least 100 more miles. And to go around you would have to go through Washington DC and we will never do that again. Traffic around DC is awful!
You will spend more in fuel trying to bypass the tunnel. I would pay the $25-$35 toll. If you haven't already done so, get an I-PASS from Illinois. You can use it all over the northeast. You can go online and add money to the iPass account at any time. Since we have a Class A and toad, we got 2 transponders so we wouldn't have to move one from the RV to the toad. Shield the 2nd transponder with aluminum foil and put in the glove compartment. You can use the iPass to go through the tunnel. You will have to turn off the propane.
  • Thanks, busskipper, that's exactly what I needed to know. I must admit I try every way I can to avoid the large cities and traffic.
  • Not that hard just head south on 13. The fuel savings and traffic headaches will more than pay for the Bridge Tunnel toll.

    BOL,
