Denali Park RV Size Restrictions?

In Fairbanks now and headed to Denali in a week..

We want to stay at Tek campground in the park. Vendor web sitefor campground
has 40' length as max.

We are a 41.5 Dynasty.

Are they going to measure us and not allow entrance to park?

If anyone has stayed at Tek and can share personal knowledge it would be
very helpful.

Thanks!
  • tee hee ... the easy out for them is that you're more than 40' and you booked a site knowing that. Can't find one to fit? Not their problem because you're longer than the limit they specify! :B
  • You might want to call directly and ask them what happens. I've never heard of it happening. Perhaps they have a 'secret' place to put you up!
  • Great info and replies everyone.

    Question:

If we are able to secure a reservation at Tek and make the drive to the park in the Dynasty and there are no sites available for our rig, will we be turned around and have to head back out of the park?

Will Aramark (the park operator) refund our money?

Just trying to plan out a good strategy in advance of our arrival.
  • OP - I answered extensively in your other post on iRV2 but in a nutshell - with our 40' motorhome we did find a spot in TEK for 5 nights and there is no measuring. We drove in around 9am. Previously, we stayed 5 nights in the front campground, Riley Creek, which has many big rig sites. We also pulled in early morning and there were plenty of sites even without reservations. For TEK you definitely need reservations. Good luck! TEK is a very special place. Also, be sure you purchase the TEK shuttle bus pass which will allow you to board the busses as many times as you want while you're there, getting off wherever you want and catching the next bus coming by - usually every 15 minutes or so. It's great!!
  • Not to knock Teklanika - but when we visited Denali a couple of years ago we were too late to book a site - which - in the end - worked in our favour - we ended up camping in Riley campground which gave us a ton more choices to deal with the three days of crappy weather before we could really start enjoying the Park.

  • We are 41½' and had no problem getting a site. BUT we got there early and had our choice of several. 1st come 1st served means you can be a loser....Don't even think about trying after noon time.
  • We just stayed at the Teklanika Campground last week. Because it was early in the season we had a wide choice of available sites to pick from. Our 5W is 35' which we found a good site for adjacent to the river. Our 19' pickup had to be disconnected and parked diagonally to fit in the site.

As Sue stated you are not assigned a site and not all sites will accommodate your length. I'd see about a Savage River site.
  • They won't measure. But you might have problems finding a site long enough for your rig at Tek. It is first-come first-serve. A specific site is not reserved for you, and the sites vary widely in size.

There were only three vacant sites from which we could choose the morning we arrived. Two weren't suitable and with the third we had to disconnect to fit. Our fifth wheel is 25' long and with the truck we total 43' in length.

It was a great site but if we couldn't have disconnected, we wouldn't have fit into any of the available sites that day. Some of the larger sites were occupied by tenters and small RVs but you can't make someone move just so you can have a site in which you'll fit.

Savage River has a better selection of sites, and the sites are separated out by size of RV.
