Devils Postpile Nat'l Monument at Mammoth Lakes CA

I will be driving a smallish "C" Class next year and plan to visit Devils Postpile Nat'l Monument near Mammoth Lakes. Is the road down to the Devils Postpile Nat'l Monument suitable for a "C" Class RV ?

I did it 10 years ago in a Chevvy truck, but cannot remember the width or grades.

  • I think you are allowed to drive in if very early in the day, before shuttle bus starts running. After that campers only. Check with Inyo NF when the spring season opens.
  • It was "Doable" in my 30' Bounder and later with my buddies 40' Country Coach DP. I was happier going out in the Honda CRV though. I stayed in the center of the road when nobody was coming, my wife followed in the Bounder. When I eased over to the edge, she had something to worry about. I think that only 1 vehicle was going into the valley as we left. If I recall right, I was driving in, towing the car behind the Bounder. However we thought better of that while going out, because should be need to back up, then we would have needed to unhitch and drive to the top separately.

    Have a great trip!

A few years ago, you needed to show your camping reservations in order to drive into the valley. Also I went there at the end of April in 1992, and could not get in due to several feet of snow.
