DirecTV reception along the Alaska Highway

In planning for AK 2014 I can't seem to remember if folks can get DirecTV reception along the Alaska Highway in BC, Yukon, and AK. It seems the satellites are too low on the horizon to get reception. Should I include my DirecTV receiver--or leave it home? I appreciate anyone's first-hand experience. Thanks!

    Leave it at home

    X2 IMHO

I had explored using our Directv when in Alaska last summer. We left our equipment home as unless you are perfectly located and could access the low ranging satellites along the horizon it would result in poor signal strength and reception.

I seem to remember reading that you can get Directv in AK if you get "specialized equipment". I don't know if that is a better dish or a signal amplifier or what for sure.

From the support page for Directv:

"Is DIRECTV available in Alaska and Hawaii?

We do offer programming in Alaska and Hawaii, including local channels. However, because of the location in relation to our satellites, special equipment might be required. Check with your local retailer for more information and programming availability.

Besides, with all the great scenery and things to do, you really don't need TV, do you??? ;)
