With traffic and accidents being commonplace, I would check Google Maps at the last minute to see which route is the fastest. I suspect the Tri-State (I-294) will be the best route. The construction will probably be shut down on Sunday.
I stopped taking the Skyway due to the cost. For me, it’s usually faster to go around the city anyway. My best guess is that traffic on the Skyway itself wouldn’t be too bad. Getting there would be a pain in the derrière, mainly due to the usual downtown traffic mess. Not that anyone will attend, but the White Sox do have a game Sunday afternoon. Their stadium is next to the expressway.
I have pulled a trailer through Chicago. If you know what lane you need to be in, it’s no big deal. If traffic is heavy and you need to change lanes at the last second because you are in the wrong lane, you obviously have a problem.
To relieve stress I would suggest following a semi. They are excellent drivers and usually maintain a steady speed. Obviously don’t get too close in case they need to stop quickly. I’ve found that people don’t want to be behind them due to lack of visibility, so you won’t get too many people cutting in front of you.
Safe travels!
