Driving Directions

Last week I searched the Good Sam website for directions from our home in Bend, Oregon to Silver Falls State Park. We had been there before, but wanted to confirm the route. The directions we received differed from the way we had always gone and looked like a great short cut since we would not have to go all the way to Sublimity (West) and then cut back to the park (East).

However, the directions from the website were not a short cut at all. We missed the sign to Teeters Road and had to double back. When we did so we estimated where the turn was, but the sign from Route 22 said, "Wagner Road". On turning there we found a sign for Teeters Road, which was marked as a dead end We turned anyway and found "road closed" sign. This indicates that there was once a road. However, if it ever was a road, it was an unpaved two track jeep trail.

It would seem that some up dating is needed. If it is any consolation, the 2010 Microsoft trips gave the same directions. But in any case, both are wrong.

  • On Google Maps sat view I can trace a twisty route from Wagner Rd, ending up on Lookout Mountain Rd which meets 214 just west of the park. I sued Ayers Creek and Shellberg Rd. There's a segment of Shellberg that gets closer to 22 (with a branch called Teeters), but it does not connect (on the map) with Fern Ridge, nor the deadend piece of Teeters further south.

Fern Ridge, Basil and Coon Hollow might get you there - or at least leave you wandering among farms, rather than in the forest.

Did you find any of this on your BenchMark or Delourme Atlases?
  • When heading to new country and the possible routes include some secondary roads, I always use both Google sat view and zoom in for a close up view, and also google street view. Those will show you what you can expect to encounter on the way.
  • We use a GPS to find a grocery store or Bar or whatever when in a strange place. When we travel we use a good old map.
  • Few things I do when travelling. I use multiple mapping sources. When I am unsure of a route, I look to see a google street view, seeing what kind of road it is.
