We go west quite often, and do the I-10 to Mobile, then go through Hattiesburg, MS to I-20 at Jackson. We stay on I-20 to catch US 287 just south of Fort Worth, then to Amarillo and I-40.
Works for us with a 40 foot DP, towing. Traveled all different times of year. Only problem was snow one time in the Texas panhandle.
Correction: Just got back from our latest trip to the west.
Do NOT recommend the drive on 287 through Fort Worth. There is lots of road construction with really terrible road conditions.
