. . . I-10 to Mobile, then go through Hattiesburg, MS to I-20 at Jackson. We stay on I-20 to catch US 287 just south of Fort Worth, then to Amarillo and I-40.
Yes, indeed, this is another good alternative which we have done several times (from East Texas to Florida that is--we start here on I-20)
But I still recommend the alternative route from I-20 to Amarillo: US 69/US82/US287, but I enjoy the open country drive and even the small towns. We even have our favorite places to eat! And we actually prefer the non-freeway route.
The point is there are several good options and personal preference is still a very large factor.
Only problem was snow one time in the Texas panhandle.
When we were active skiers, it was the Texas Panhandle which seemed always to be the worst part of the trip when there was snow--or even worse: ice.
