driving from oklahoma to oregon (moving)

Need help with route, leaving tulsa,ok area on October 1st, driving to medford, oregon. We are traveling in a honda CRV with two dogs (labs) and a 12ft. moving truck. I'm figuring about 650 miles/day taking 3 days, 2 nights. We need budget places to spend the night with the dogs and safe place for the truck. I'm looking at KOA's since they have kabins that accept dogs. I'd appreciate any help and suggestions.

  • Not a lot of gas stations, but enough. I was never the least bit concerned about that.
  • I had thought about that route but I think we may go check out lake tahoe since we are so near. I had heard there are not many gas stations going the way you went, true?
  • I did this trip going the other way. Here is my route from mid-Nevada:

I was driving a big uhaul truck. No problems and fabulous scenery. Looks like it would save you about 80 miles.

This is the route I was thinking of; I-35 to I-70 (kansas), first night in strasburg, colorado then I-25 to (wyoming) and I-80 all the way to Reno, after that I'm not sure how to get up to Medford.Do I need to worry about driving across Nevada (gas stations)? I was thinking 2nd night at Wendover Utah and driving on in on 3rd day however I am now thinking of stretching it to 3 nights. I'm not sure how much we will need to stop and take breaks so maybe 2nd night at Salt Lake City, 3rd at Reno then drive on in to medford. KOA's have "kabins" that accept pets, motels charge extra (motel 6 is $10 per dog). I don't think I need to go to portland or ontario. This trip is just me (marla) driving the moving truck and my daughter driving her vehicle with dogs.

No problem getting gas on 80, when you get down to 1/2 tank watch for gas stations, will you be using a GPS? do you have a laptop?
From Reno go 395 to Susanville than 44 to 89 to I 5 north to Medford.Lots of RVs and Trucks take this rout to Medford, get gas in Susanville than on I 5 at Mt.Shasta or Weed, Ca. The weather should be good may get a little rain, we will be traveling at this time too.

Wish someone would give some help on this post, trying to figure out a decent route and places to stay with dogs. thanks

Assuming Hwy. 80 is not closed because of the floods, I would plan on:
    1. hwy 35
    2. hwy. 80
    3 hwy. 84 to Portland.

KOA's are high dollar in calif. , i don't know about other states. I would call various motels/hotels i.e. Motel 6, Holiday Inn, Super 8 and find one that allows dogs, then I would pick one out every 600 miles in the nearest town and make reservations for all 3 nights. Nothing worse than driving all day and then trying to find a motel when you are all beat up and tired. 600 miles a day is going to be a grueling trip for you and your rear end:):):)

If you go the way that djgarcia says when you get to 84 at Ontario, Oregon go 20 to 97 than south to 138 ( the north Crater Lake road )
go south 230 to 62 into Medford, a easy drive I do it every so often.
Why go to Portland ???,you don't need interstate hwys. with your setup.

  • why not tow your CVR behind the tow truck. Drivers can switch off to help you driving that many miles per day.
