Driving from Zion to Capitol Reef

We will be moving from Zion to Capitol Reef this week. We are towing a 35 ft 5er that is 13’5” high. I am looking at taking 15 to 70 to 24 but wonder if there is a better route. Don’t mind 2 lane but nothing with sharp edges ( so, no to Rte 12). Any suggestions for a good route appreciated.
  • Have you been to Bryce? You can't pass it up! It's right in the middle of the other two. Your route would be ok but not as pretty as Hwy 12.

If you wanted to include Bryce and want to exit Zion via I-15 then take I-15 to Hwy 20 at Circleville to 89 south to 12 to Bryce. Hwy 12 at this end is almost flat. There's one tunnel on 12 just before Bryce but it's easily doable with a RV - short and a flat straight shot. Semis drive it. After Bryce then backtrack on 12 to 89 and take 89 north to 62 to 24. Good roads.

From Bryce to Capitol Reef is gorgeous. It's a typical two-lane width road. If you usually stay in your lane you won't have a problem. :)

Another route out of Zion is Hwy 9 west to Hurricane then pick up Utah Hwy 59 which becomes 389 in Arizona taking you to Fredonia, AZ. From that point you're not far from the North Rim of Grand Canyon. Then you could get on 89 north to the above-mentioned routes to Bryce and/or Capitol Reef. Lots to see in that whole area. As long as you're there you might as well.

    ^^^^^^^^^^ REALLY GOOD ADVICE^^^^^^^^^^

Bryce - And the Many State Parks (Kodachrome - Escalante - Goblins Just to mention a few) - You have made it to Southern Utah - PLEASE - Don't Miss ANY of IT.

So much to See Never Enough TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

    JMHO,
  • Also to add to two gypsies route info. If you go to Bryce as you leave Bryce instead of backtracking on 12 back to 89 then up to 62 you can go straight across the road as you leave Bryce on Johns Valley Road/22 which is decent road and catch 62 up at Otter Creek State park will save some miles.
  • Well thank you both but we really are just looking for route advise. We have been to Zion, Bryce, Grand Staircase, Moab, Arches and the Canyon multiple times. We have never been to Capitol Reef so am just looking for best route to go there.

I use 22 north from Bryce...good straight road with one set of curves and then 62.
  • Capitol Reef is one of our favorite places - so glad you are going there. We have been there several times. Crowds are not like the others. So beautiful.

I would go 89 - 62 - 24; have done it many times - about 175 miles, good road and good decision not to go 12 with trailer. You have no control of the guy coming against you.

PM or email me if you want info on C R.

  • Thank you Lauren! We are going to do 1-15 to 1-70 (Richfield) over to 24 out of Zion but will follow your suggestion when we leave Torrey. We are headed to Page, AZ so that works! Thanks again!
