Thanks for all the replies. We will head your advise and go north on Rt. 50.
If you take US 50, a four lane road north from south shore, it will interesct with SR 28, an easy two lane road to Incline Village, then on into California and at Kings Beach you can as an option take SR 267 to Truckee. It saves miles and time and some congestion at Tahoe City. It does climb and descend and be careful on the descent as it is fairly steep but if you are careful or have a diesel with an exhaust brake you should have no issues. At Truckee take IR 80 west, an easy on ramp interchange after crossing the river and you will be soon at Emigrant. Very doable.
