Where are you coming from? South on the peninsula?
If so, the best (only) route through from south to the golden gate bridge would be highway 101. When the freeway ends it becomes Van Ness Avenue heading straight north until Lombard Street. 101 turns left (west) on Lombard and continues until it becomes a regular highway passing Crissy Field just before the Golden Gate Bridge.
This route is the least hilly (a play on words). Do not get off the route or you will have big time problems.
Side streets are crowded with cars even with 70% of the people not being able to afford a car if they live there. No such thing as a nice place to camp near San Francisco on the peninsula.
If your first trip there stay over on the mainland (Oakland side of bay) and visit with your car only coming across the Bay Bridge to downtown S.F. Hauling your trailer better to take the 580 bridge north of Oakland to get to the west coast and Napa valley area.
