I see you are pushing them to the west side of Twin Peaks. The route (Highway 1) would be less hilly but no view of downtown S.F. (maybe a view of the Pacific coast). It would involve driving through the Golden Gate Park and Presidio Park.
The OP never stated which direction he was coming from. I would agree that getting to the area around Highway 101 north of the Golden Gate Bridge would work best for access to downtown S.F.
For anyone over 65 getting the 1-day Muni pass for $15., or one month for $23. beats the adult rate of $60. for one day. Easiest way to cover the whole city of San Francisco.
