Yes that is true. In my former life as a truck driver and making many trips to the San Francisco Airport, I found that using the 280 instead of the 101 there is a lot less traffic than going thru all those towns. Also if you make one bad turn in downtown you are in a lot of trouble.
Splitting off the 280 at the 19th street (Hwy 1) exit is easy, with large easy to follow road signs. The ride thru the parks is just a little bit more sightseeing.
The best part is the ride across the Golden Gate Bridge no matter how you get there.
Just a minor correction, it's 19th Ave not 19th St. 19th St will take you through the Mission and the Castro and get you nowhere near the GG Bridge.
