Dry Camping in Mexico!

Anyone have good safe dry camping / boondocking locations in Mexico? With this winter's install of Solar don't need hookups as often.

Rocmoc, you've been to Mexico already. As people said, these days you can't just pull off the road and camp.

Though in Baja, AND if you can't be seen from the road - maybe, at times. But a nice place where you would want to stay for more than just sleeping one night, will either have a good road access or somebody living there. So you're looking at some "camp".

Baja places like Concepcion Bay are "camps". Dry, but still camps. Somebody will come and collect - even when they don't provide any services. The very meaning of "camp" is different there, it's just a place where you can pay and stay. Can be a beach with an lone ranchero living on-site and no other campers so it doesn't look like a camp, like San Raphael for example. Or it can be a camp in Concepcion with many other campers, and permanent palapas, and a restaurant (and a dozen generators to listen). It's funny how many people are entrenched in 20-year old beliefs that small solar panel still costs several hundreds, and LED lights are all "wrong color", and so on.

OK, but that is in Texas. What about in Mexico.

OK, but that is in Texas. What about in Mexico.
  • "The Free Trailer Park" in Melaque. Always lots of company but no facilities
  • ioverlander.com has lots of sites in Mexico. Available as POI files as well
  • Lots of great boondocking spots in many states. It all depends where you're headed. A few examples; Guadalcazar, SLP, San Miguel de Allende, GTO, Yurecuaro, Mich, Leon Guzman, Dur, Mazatlan (Isla de Piedra), Sin, Los Lirios, Coah, Bustamante, NL, Galeana, NL, Pena de Bernal, Que, the list goes on.

As I have stated before, people shy away from the border saying they want to "beat feet" across are greatly mistaken. With the exception of northeastern Tamaulipas, the border states including Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo Leon are much safer than many Mexican states where rvers spend the winter. Think about it.
  • We used to camp on the beach all the time in my younger days. Tents, then a tent trailer and we even parked a 24' Pace Arrow on the beach for a week. But, that was then, this is now...unless you have cartel connections, boon docking alone in Mexico is, IMHO not a good idea....Dennis
  • The days of pulling off the highway and camping alone anywhere in Baja are pretty much over. For 20 years, I did just that regularly without a care, but no more. There is just too much drug-related crime these days..much of which is meth. Think safety in numbers when choosing a dry camp.if you don't want to use one of the many RV parks.

But not to lose hope, you will find many secure places with a little investigation. For just one example, The Bay of Conception south of Mulege does offer many dry-camp opportunities right on the beach. All the north end beaches are relatively safe and are very popular with dry campers. I would not recommend the deserted southern end where there has been a history of petty theft. Also, I would not recommend being the only one at a camp that is highly visible from the roadways.

Listen to those hairs on your neck.

As in all decisions about security, forewarned in forearmed.
  • Safest in Baja. I would not boondock alone anywhere in Mexico and I am the first to tell people that mexico is safe for RVers.
