Durango, CO to Red River, NM

I'm thinking that Wolf Creek Pass might be steeper and higher than the climb/descent east of Tierra Amarilla. I could be wrong, but that's my impression.

In Red River go to Sundance restaurant and do the honey chilpolte pork tinder loin, with a frozen margarita. It will make you want to jump back and slap yourself. Also, agree about Shot Gun Willie's. He has a great breakfast.

However you end up going do not miss a visit to Shotgun Willy's in Red River {west side of town just north of the ski lift} for their infamous smoked brisket breakfast burrito, smothered in Hatch green chile sauce. .. it is to die for! The red River brewery, just up the street a couple of blocks is rated as the best in New Mexico and I have found no issue with that rating.

While you are in the area the Viet Nam Memorial in Angel Fire is a must see. The ski lifts in Red River and Angel Fire make for a spectacular summer adventure as well. Red River and Angel Fire are two of the most beautiful little towns found in the southern Rockies and well worth exploring. Enjoy!

But they could head on over to Alamosa or Ft. Garland and then head south to Red River. And they did ask about alternate routes. I haven’t driven to Red River by either of those so can’t comment on them.

Pretty smooth sailing from Durango to Pagosa

Of course Wolf Creek Pass, 10800 ft, is in between. Not difficult but some 7% grades on the west side. We just went thru there but continued on all the way on Hwy 160 to I-25 yesterday.

Just to get you in the right mood.

On 64 between Tres Piedra and Tierra Amarilla east-bound there is a descent of 5-6% for about 6 miles. It's all two lane with some 30 MPH curves.

I've been through there a couple of times in recent years, although with a small rig. Pretty smooth sailing from Durango to Pagosa and from Pagosa to Tierra Amarilla. East of the latter town you'll come to a steady climb, no overly tight curves, to a summit and steady descent to Tres Piedras. Not sure of the actual grade percent but I don't think you'd have a problem. Nothing stands out in my memory about the highway to Questa and then east to Red River; I've only traversed it once but I think it's pretty easy.
