Your original route should work out fine. After Scranton pick up 84 east and just stay on that until you get to the Mass Pike (I-90) in sturbridge. Then it is your choice whether you want to take 290 to 495 or if you just want to stay on 84 to 495. It really doesnt matter and would depend on traffic, your not really saving any time either way. You will pay a couple bucks for tolls in MA and NH and about $10 each way in ME alone. As far as the drive, it depends on the day of the week and time of day. If you can avoid going through waterbury and hartford during rush hour during the week it will save you a lot of aggrivation. I will be traveling the same route next weekend to ME from CT as we do every year, and we love the drive. Once you get on the ME turnpike (I-95) you literally have woods on both sides of you. Look for the moose crossing signs on the highway, my kids get a kick out of that. Enjoy the trip, new england is a special kind of place.
