East to West across Oregon

If I drive up I-84 through Idaho, is there an RV friendly route I could take across Oregon to get to Newport, rather than following I-84 all the way to Portland and then down? Something involving Hwy 20 and/or 26 maybe??

The drive would be this month.
  • We've gone west on 26 and really enjoyed it. Then at Sisters we go 242.
  • We would take 84 to 205, 99E to 5.
Then 34 through Corvalis to 20 into Newport.
Try to time it going by Portland around 11:00- 12:00
on a weekday. Mornings, after 1:00, and weekends any
    time are horrible.
Alternate would be coastal route. 26 South of Seaside
to 101 and down. But then you have to go through Portland.
  • First off don't take OR 242.

OK on a bike, car or small MH. It has a length limit of 35 (?) feet. Has cameras to spy on violators. Every now an then a Super Trucker tries it and gets stuck. Narrow, rough, windy and closed in winter. It is beautful drive and has an observation point at top up a short walk. Can see, on a clear day 7 (?) of the Cascade peaks. If you got a car or such consider making a day trip up there either from Sisters or the Blue River area.

US 20 out of Ontatio is a rather dry and dusty route. US 26 is a lot more scenic. OR 7 out of Baker to US 26 is a nice drive.

If you take 26 in Prineville pick up OR126 into Sisters then you can connect with 20. You can follow 20 all way to coast. The section over the Cascades is rather windy but totally doable.
  • After visiting Yellowstone, staying in Island Park ID as a base, we took 20 to I-84 then to 26 to Vale the 20 thru Burns to Bend, OR. and you then can take the 20 all the way to Newport.

No problems along the way and nice place to stop for overnights.

Click here to see where we stopped along the way. Being retired we were in no rush so we had a few overnights.

We were enroute to Coos Bay so turned S. down the I-5 to the 38 to the coast.
  • US 26 across central OR, At Prineville OR 126 to US 20 at Sisters to OR 22. At Junction of I-5 south to US 20 west to Newport.
Lots of great scenery through central OR.

    This is the best info.

DO NOT do 242 unless you are 35 ft total.
  • 242 is an awesome motorcycling road. Usually MC and RV roads don't mix.

enblethen's route is the one I'd take also.
  • Yes, that's the route I decided on with all the comments here....26/126/20.

    Don't worry, I definitely won't be taking 242.

    Thanks again!
