Eastern Ontario to Yellowknife

Leaving for Yellowknife from Eastern Ontario. Following a job there. DW, two sons, 2 dogs and a cat and we head out in a week. Walmart lots for three nights here and there, and provincial or territorial parks the rest of the way except for High Level, Alberta, where there are only local camp sites. Fun planning the whole thing. We should get there in two weeks, although we could do it in 11 days. 5233 kliks and 60 hours driving. Truck went in to the dealer and they went over everything. I have camp sites booked along the Trans Canada Highway, but after we head north from Edmonton, its first come first served since it is after Labour Day long weekend. Wish us luck!

  • The last 50-75 km of highway to Yellowknife is pretty poor, the pavement is good but there are frost heaves or sunk spots everywhere. Just take your time so you don't ruin the suspension of your truck. If you have time, drive into Hay River and stay at the territorial CG there, one of the best we stayed at on our recent trip to the north. Brenda, the camp host, is a super lady and will help you with any special needs that you may have.
  • Hi,

If you have passports "in place" it might be cheaper and faster to enter the USA at Sault Ste. Marie and take highway #28 and then #2 until Minot, ND.
  • Have a great trip and great future with your new job.

We just came back from 2 weeks in northern Ontario. It was getting cool around 8C at night.

Remember that you can't transport wood for your campfire if it was not from the region.
  • Good luck sounds like a great adventure ...and getting a job at the end to boot !!
