I like getting off at Van Horn and going via Marfa, Del Rio, etc. US 90, 277, and 83. If you go Ft. Stockton and 285 or use 90 from Van Horn there is a good fuel stop in Sanderson.
I would avoid San Antonio traffic although you can miss some by using the 410 or other by-pass routes. 173 from Kerrville to I-35 is good. Check with TX DOT for construction on any route you choose.
