ESCAPING to the MOTHER ROAD

Do you do it ? Escape from a plan or agenda when suddenly you see a section of old Route 66 coming up ? We sure do. Here is a link to a discussion that includes photos, video and a look at reference material that we use to research those escapes.
ESCAPING THE INTERSTATE OFF ONTO ROUTE 66

Such a fine sight to see! To the post, that's bucket list fodder, as is my wish to travel all of the Lincoln Highway, Rt. 30.
  • Always. My favorite is standin on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.
  • After my wife got out of the hospital 5 yrs ago, we did the cross country tour of old 66. There is still a lot of the old road left, goes through some fascinating little towns that are hanging onto life only because they are associated to the Mother Road. Lot of highlights. I got a kick out of a wild donkey trying to chew a piece of our plastic fender on the fifth wheel we had at the time. Little town of Oatman, CA on our return route. Anyways, worth jumping off on occasionally.
  • I get off the interstate whenever possible and practical.
Route 66 would be a definite detour.
You can't see America from the Interstate Highway System.
  • In the summer of '67 myself and three college buddies drove part of it on our "around the U.S." tour. The Route 66 TV series inspired us. Four guys in a Plymouth Barracuda with no A/C. I wish I had a copy of the journal we kept, but the guy that had it passed away several years ago. I still vividly remember driving across the Mohave Desert in that rolling greenhouse.
Sadly, parts of 66 have been bypassed or cannibalized since then. Wikipedia has a good write up on it.

The only place I used to find the Historic ROUTE 66 still in service was in and around KINGMAN FLAGSTAFF and HOLBROOK AZ... Kinda neat still seeing the Historic Road Markers

Everyone out in that area should get a picture pose standing next to one of the Route 66 road signs while they are still here...

Love your NORTH ARKANSAS high country ranges... In my AF DAYS wandered around many of your high country places working on the Air Force TITAN II MISSLE Silos in the mid 60s...

Never heard it referred to the OUTBACK before...
