HiDid a search but couldn't find my answer. The question; I have a pickup with a truck camper. My ezpass will charch the car rate with the camper on which is fine. I will be towing a utilty trailer ,14', with 2 axels. I know they count axels. Should I get a separate ezpass for when I have the camper and am towing the trailer? I don't want to end up being charged a tractor trailer rate. Can you register in some way your rig specs to an ezpass account to avoid overcharges? Is there a recreational vehicle rate opposed to a commercial one? Thanks.

We just use our regular ez pass and have always been charged for the truck & camper.

Seems different states have different rules. Some (most?) require a special ezpass for towing trailers, that lets you change vehicle configuration, the normal automobile ones don't apparently?Towing my single axle camper west last winter, I was on the Chicago Skyway long enough to pass a single toll plaza, I went through the ipass / cash lane, and the toll taker said my ezpass had registered the correct amount. I thought it odd, since I only have the automobile ezpass.

On the Pennsylvania Turnpike, if the weight of the camper or trailer pushes you into a higher class of vehicle, the higher toll will be charged to your account. If you are traveling on other E-ZPass agency toll roads or bridges, please contact the appropriate agency for further information. Refer to the list participating agencies on FAQ # 2.I would think NY E-ZPass would be the same but as the above says you may want to check with them.

I guess it would depend on where you are traveling. I live in New Jersey and all of our tollroads charge the same high rate for a four axle truck and camper as they would for a four axle commercial truck. The only time I ran into a different per axle pricing in my travels was when I took Route I 78 to Pennsylvania. I was charged a higher than expected truck rate but one quick phone call and it was resolved.

The Florida turnpike charges a rate for one vehicle and if towing they charge PER ADDITIONAL AXLE!!! 3 times the one vehicle rate!!!

We rarely use toll roads when towing, but just this past weekend we went through an EZ Pass lane in northern VA. I looked at my statement and they charged $6.25 due to the extra axles.

I have been through many NY state tolls in different parts of the state and they all counted my axles and charged me correctly.

Different states - different rules.
I've been told Massachusetts counts the axles and calculates the toll.
NY doesn't count axles and I have 2 EZPass transponders, white for bobtail and blue for towing the trailer.
And I've been told that NY does random audits to see if people are using the correct transponder.

Before we took our fist trip into PA with our ez pass, we called the number on our statement, and was told the scanner detects axles and we would be charged accordingly. So whether we are towing or not, we are charged correctly. We always use the express lines as well.

Call EZ-pass in NY and they will set you up so everything is at the correct class. They did for me and it works fine from NY to MD with no issues.

I have a RI EZ Pass. The toll booths in Maine and New Hampshire automatically figure out the correct toll when I am towing. One I go through often in New Hampshire has high speed lanes (65mph) and it shows the correct amount with 2 axle trailer.

Rules seem to vary by state.

We noticed in the years we had our Illinois I-Pass (similar system) that the IL tollway charges were all over the map - some of them charged us the car rate, others much higher. We never pursued it; figured it was kind of a wash.
