From a native to the very area, I can tell you this simply is not true.
Once you get to I-75, go south until you reach Marietta. Take the Ga. Hwy 120 east exit and follow it to Roswell. At the dead end in Roswell turn left on Ga. Hwy 9 to Alpharetta.
Yes, these are surface streets with the usual traffic lights, etc. but this is a multi-lane route that does move quickly with a 45 mph to 55 mph speed limit.
