First time drive to Atlanta/Alpharetta, GA

Hi, I am driving to the Atlanta/Alpharetta area this weekend. But I hear the traffic into Atlanta can be challenging, plus I have never driven there before. I am one hour south of Nashville or an hour north of Birmingham, can I get suggestions to alternative roads with directions to take vice the big busy highways. This is a pleasure trip for myself and daughter, but I want to get there safely as well.
