Fishing Bridge (Yellowstone) to east side of Glacier

I have never been to either Yellowstone or Glacier but we have a trip there this summer. I'm looking for the best route when towing our travel trailer from Fishing Bridge RV Campground in Yellowstone to St Mary, MT (on the east side of Glacier). My main question is the best way to get out of Fishing Bridge (while towing!) and to I-90.

I am towing a 31' TT with a new F250 diesel truck. I am not scared of mountain towing per se, but I am not necessarily looking for a "scary" ride either.

Just looking at the map, here are some options that I see immediately.

1) From Fishing Bridge, take Grand Loop Rd north to US212 west to US89 north to Gardiner and eventually Livingston where I pick up I90 west. (I have it from there.) The main thing here is I just don't know what Grand Loop Rd is like *while towing*. Things I read say US89 north out of Gardiner is easy. Here's a map: https://goo.gl/maps/7XrQoXBMCCu

2) In case Grand Loop Rd is not practical while towing, I could instead head west out of Fishing Bridge, hit US20 west to US191 north until it hits US89 north which gets me to Gardiner albeit by a different route than in (1). Google maps won't let me create this route, but you can see it in the link above.

3) Quite different than the last two, I could instead head west out of Fishing Bridge, hit US20 west to US191 north to West Yellowstone to get me out of the park. From there I'd continue north on US191 to Big Sky and eventually Bozeman and I90 west. OR, out of West Yellowstone, I could go a little further west and hit US 287 north to get me to I90. (I have it from there.) Google won't let me create this route, but you can see it in the link above.

Thanks for your input in helping me find the "best" route(s) while towing.

I would cut the corner and then use I-15 up to 2 and then over to 89. Even then you will get your fill of curvy roads.

    .

I would exit straight up North which is the way I entered. I would not use NE or E entrance.

  • the loop roads are really busy during the summer season months, so it will be slow going. I don't know if they are still working on the west side of the north loop or not...it was undergoing major overhaul a year ago.

for a bit faster going, go west to West Yellowstone and then north on either of the roads you mention...either is good as far as I know.
